JUUL KRAIJER24 November 2023 – 9 March 2024 We are pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Juul Kraijer during the third edition of Milano Drawing Week. Juul Kraijer (*1970) creates large drawings depicting female figures merging with natural elements. With light and sensitive but precise lines, she conjures up faces and bodies that transform into branches, leaves, as well as snakes, birds or swarms of insects. Her evanescent and at the same time clear figures describe the overlap between human and natural realms: as in a contemporary metamorphosis they stage the complicity between the individual and plants or animals. There is no setting nor gestures, the perspectives are imperceptible and the bodies silent. The transformations in Kraijer's work have absolute composure, grace, and harmony. Young women's hair turns into branches or entwined snakes; the palm of a hand shows lines growing into a tiny leafless tree; the female body of the immense drawing that is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York merges into a volcanic landscape of ash clouds and crater lakes. Her drawings recall the Indian culture of contemplation: subtle gestures, elegant miniatures, gods, and demons in animal forms. This exhibition will also show a series of collages, a technique that the artist started experimenting with during the pandemic. She uses 19th century French illustrated magazines – as Max Ernst did to make his famous collage novels. These new works embody the theme of the relationship between nature and man too: animal bodies merge with human bodies or landscapes, creating new hybrid beings in a world where boundaries are not absolute and the dichotomy between nature and human no longer exists. Juul Kraijer was born in Assen in the Netherlands in 1970 and lives in Rotterdam. As early as 2001, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam dedicated her a solo exhibition and during her artistic career she has exhibited at the Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf, the Third Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art at the Garage Center, La Maison Rouge in Paris as part of the exhibition Théatre du Monde – curated by Jean-Hubert Martin, as well as at San Diego Art Institute, the Kunsthalle in Giessen, Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi and Museum Sinclair-Haus in Bad Homburg. Her works are in the collections of the Stedelijk and the Museum Overholland in Amsterdam, MoMA in New York, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, and many other public and private collections. The third Milano Drawing Week – a widespread exhibition of modern and contemporary drawing – will be held from Saturday 25 November to Sunday 3 December 2023.The event is promoted by Collezione Ramo which follows, starting from the early 20th century, the traces on paper of the major representatives of Italian artistic movements and great talents. The aim is to document the richness of this artistic practice through works on paper, including drawings as well as watercolors, collages, gouaches, pastels. All galleries participating in the 'Milano Drawing Week' will exhibit a work from the Ramo Collection. Juul Kraijer chose to include in her exhibition an ink on paper drawing by Betty Danon (1927 - 2002), an Italian artist of Turkish origin.

JUUL KRAIJER24 novembre 2023 – 9 marzo 2024 Siamo felici di annunciare il ritorno in Italia dell’artista olandese Juul Kraijer, alla quale dedicheremo una personale che inaugura il 24 novembre 2023, in occasione della terza edizione di Milano Drawing Week. Juul Kraijer (*1970) crea grandi disegni che ritraggono figure femminili che si fondono con elementi naturali. Con linee leggere e sensibili ma precise evoca visi e corpi che si trasformano in rami, foglie, o anche serpenti, uccelli e sciami di insetti. Le sue figure evanescenti e allo stesso tempo limpide descrivono il superamento fra umano e vegetale o animale: come in una metamorfosi contemporanea inscenano la complicità tra l’individuo - quasi sempre femminile - e la natura, le piante, gli animali. Nessuna ambientazione, nessun gesto, prospettive impercettibili, corpi silenziosi: con assoluta compostezza, grazia e armonia, le trasformazioni nelle opere di Kraijer - i capelli di giovani donne che diventano rami o serpenti intricati; il palmo di una mano le cui linee si innalzano in un piccolo albero senza foglie; il corpo femminile dell'enorme disegno della collezione del Museum of Modern Art di New York che si fonde in un paesaggio vulcanico fatto di nuvole di cenere e laghi craterici - rimandano alla cultura indiana della contemplazione: gesti sottili, miniature eleganti, dei e demoni in forma di animali. Presenteremo in questa mostra anche una serie di collage, tecnica completamente nuova per l’artista, alla quale ha cominciato a lavorare durante la pandemia e per cui utilizza riviste illustrate francesi del XIX secolo, lo stesso materiale usato da Max Ernst per creare i suoi famosi romanzi-collage. Anche in queste nuove opere, tema principale è il rapporto tra la natura e l'uomo: i corpi animali si fondono con quelli umani o con paesaggi, dando vita a nuovi esseri ibridi in un mondo in cui i confini non sono assoluti e la dicotomia tra natura e umano non esiste più. Juul Kraijer è nata ad Assen in Olanda nel 1970 e vive a Rotterdam. Già nel 2001 lo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam le ha dedicato una mostra personale e, nel corso della sua carriera artistica ha esposto al Kunst Palast di Düsseldorf, ha preso parte alla Terza Biennale di Arte Contemporanea di Mosca al Garage Center, ha partecipato alla mostra Theatre Du Monde curata da Jean-Hubert Martin alla Maison Rouge a Parigi, ha presentato i suoi lavori al San Diego Art Institute, al Kunsthalle di Giessen, alla Vadehra Art Gallery di New Delhi, al Museum Sinclair-Haus di Bad Homburg. Le sue opere si trovano nelle collezioni dello Stedelijk e del Museum Overholland di Amsterdam, del MoMA di New York, del Museum Boijmans van Beuningen di Rotterdam, del Kiasma Museum di Helsinki e in numerose altre collezioni pubbliche e private.La terza edizione della Milano Drawing Week, mostra diffusa di disegno moderno e contemporaneo, si terrà da sabato 25 novembre a domenica 3 dicembre.La manifestazione è promossa dalla Collezione Ramo che, a partire dal primo Novecento segue le tracce su carta dei maggiori rappresentanti dei movimenti artistici italiani e dei grandi talenti con l’obiettivo di documentare con lavori su carta, non solo disegni ma anche works on paper (acquerelli, collages, gouaches, pastelli), la ricchezza di questa pratica artistica. Tutte le gallerie che partecipano alla "Milano Drawing Week" esporranno un'opera della Collezione Ramo. Juul Kraijer ha scelto di integrare nella sua mostra un disegno a china di Betty Danon (1927 - 2002), artista italiana di origine turca.
