EMILIO GOLADear friend, what’s the time?26 July – 27 September 2025 Monica De Cardenas is pleased to announce an exhibition of charcoal drawings by Italian artist Emilio Gola with the title “Dear friend, what’s the time?” at the gallery in Zuoz. Emilio Gola’s works – be it drawings or paintings – do not have a strictly narrative intent, nor an illustrative purpose. His practice renders reality, yet filtered through an emotional distance, observed with restraint. The subjects that inhabit his works – young friends, siblings, studio mates, fellow artists – seem to enter the image not merely to be represented, but rather to be welcomed. The bodies offer themselves to a gaze that accompanies them: they are figures captured in a state of surrender, oscillating between intimacy and exposure, as if they had just dozed off in a space that allows them to be themselves, without having to prove anything. The poses, often the result of live drawing sessions, do not chase after effect or balanced composition. An unnaturally bent arm, a tilt of the head, body weight slipping off-axis – these are minimal details that, in Gola’s visual language, become structural elements. The bodies do not simply stand; they lean, seek, and support one another. The relationship – first physical, then visual – precedes any formal construction. It is the body, more than the scene, that generates the space. In Gola’s paintings, these relationships often become choral, like a messy living web of affections. In contrast, the new drawings presented at Monica De Cardenas in Zuoz reveal a different approach: they are mostly single portraits. Each figure is left alone, with the only exception of the big drawing depicting the artist’s two brothers. Shared time gives way to a one-to-one time: more exposed, perhaps more fragile. These drawings – executed in charcoal on Hahnemühle paper – emerge as quick annotations. Unlike painting, which Gola conceives as a slow, sedimented process where the image gradually takes shape, drawing seems to come closer to the instant, perhaps more faithful to the moment and the person depicted. Alongside human figures, small marginal objects appear – a pillow, a sock, a brick – not to enrich the scene with anecdotal details, but to make the world more tangible. They are discreet, concrete presences that seem to share with the bodies the same measure of attention, as if they, too, had a posture to assume. For Gola, drawing seems to evoke a form of silent care, conveyed through attention to postures and the precarious balance of compositions. In this sense, his images resemble a diary where seemingly insignificant everyday moments are preserved. There is something in these works that remains suspended – a slight instability, as if the image were on the verge of changing. The bodies are close, vulnerable, never fully posed. It seems that Gola does not seek a definitive form for them but rather prolongs the time of observation, lingering in that specific moment. One might then wonder: How do you draw a relationship without simplifying it? How do you capture a presence without turning it into a mere figure? Gola’s answer, if there is one, lies in the image itself – and in the way it builds over time, unhurried, one drawing at a time.Micola Clara Brambilla Emilio Gola (b. 1994, Milan) lives and works in Milan.
